David Bailey Contextual Reference


David Bailey is an English Fashion Photographer most known for his images of celebrities and models however he is also known for his book of NWI (1982) in which he documented the gentrification of Camden and Primrose Hill neighbourhoods in London.

When he first started to launch his career he dropped out of high school to serve in the royal air force where Bailey gained an interest for the love of Henri Cartier Bresson's photography, when he returned to England he gained the title of being John French's assistant where he was able to develop his own skills.


During the course of the 1960's-70's Bailey gained more fame due to his multiple high profile marriages to Jean Shrimpton, Catherine Deneuvre and Marie Helvin.

In 1965 he managed to publish his first Photography book "Box of pin up's" which includes a collection of black and white images capturing the famous faces of Mick Jagger, the Beatles, Twiggy and Andy Warhol plus many others.


His work has been represented in many galleries such as the national portrait gallery and Victoria and Albert museum in London. Due to his famous works he has been awarded the title commander of the order of the British empire from Queen Elizabeth II and a lifetime achievement award from International Centre of photography in New York.
