Nick Fancher Contextual Reference

Fancher is a well known author, photographer and educator who specialises in the use of his ambient dramatic lighting but also bold colours and the experimentation of different techniques. What I find most interesting is Fancher's use of minimal equipment and also how unusual his locations are compared to most photographers.

Nick Fancher graduated with a BFA in photography in 2005 from Ohio State and since then he has authored many books explaining his techniques and different types of work he has created for example "Studio Anywhere 1&2" and "Chroma".

Fancher has created many inspiring and beautiful pieces of work but most importantly, during the pandemic of Covid-19 he was able to take interest and shoot his images through facetime and zoom which meant he was still producing amazing photographs but also complying with restrictions and keeping him and the models health safe from any risks, to create these masterpieces Fancher contacted the models through facetime and zoom and then projected their image onto a screen which he had connected to his laptop/computer. To get over the poor quality of the video call Fancher used the technique of blurring the models to create a cleaner image and he also used materials and textures to make the predicted audience believe that the models were actually in the studio.

Out of all his work I really like the use of slow shutter speed and how he uses this and multiple other techniques to create ghost like features on his images.
