Research On Eugene Smith

William Eugene Smith was born in 1918 in kansas ans started with a career in photojournalism his firt sent of work was for two local papers, and in 1936 he attended Notre Dame Uni where he had a special photographic scholarship created for him in 1937 he worked for news week but he was fired due to him refusing to use medium format cameras so he became a freelancer for black star agency.


Eugene Smith had a large impact on photojournalism and on the agency in general, smith uses his work to create powerful narrative structures using his technique of a playwrite to produce his pieces of work.

He shot a series in 1948 for life magazine documenting the life of Dr Ernest Guy Ceriani, called The Country Doctor, this series followed his journey to and from work covering his day exploring the different cases in the day and giving detailed shots throughout his visits.


This series drew attention and created awarness for the lack of medical doctors at the time and also what impact this had on different communities. overall the series conveyed the rewards but also the unrewarding parts of Ceriani's job as he saves lives but could also be loosing lives.
