Richard Avedon- research


Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer who specialised in shooting images which captured movement in a still image whilst focusing on fashion, theatre and dance.

According to the New York Times "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define American's image pf style and beauty and culture for the last half a century."

In 1944 he began work as an advertising photographer for department stores, however Alexey Brodovitch quickly endorsed him, in addition Lillian Bassman also promoted Avedon's career at Harpers Bazaar.

After this his work began appearing a year later in Junior Bazaar and then after a year in 1946 they were appearing in Harpers Bazaar.


In 1946 Richard Avedon set up a studio and began providing images for magazines such as Vogue and Life, he soon became Chief photographer at Harpers Bazaar.

His work consisted of using natural lighting however he eventually decided to shoot in a studio and test out strobe lighting.

From 1950 his work was contributed to Life, Look and Graphis magazines which eventually led to him becoming staff editor and photographer for Theatre Arts Magazine.
