Zed Nelson Research And Narrative

Zed Nelson is a London based photographer who focuses his work on things that are normally scrutinised by the general population. I have noticed that his work likes to draw attention to social ideas or phenomena that he picks apart and explores the stereotypes that have been made in the community.

He mainly aims to shoot images on a Film camera however for digital photography he uses a Nikon or a Canon camera.

His early work was based around conflict so he has visited many high conflict areas for work such as Afghanistan where his friend and interpreter got shot.

Nelson has written a few books and one is picking apart and looking further into the stereotypes on gangs in America and it is called gun nation.

His documentary "the streets" is based on old school ideas and also how he is conveying the middle/working class community in areas that are loosing their community to higher class brands and owners trying to set up restaurants and places of accommodation there.

My Skate Park Narrative & Contact Sheets

These images are inspired by Zed Nelsons work in which he continued to shoot images in the same area over a 4 year period, my last two images of the final eight are my establishing shots to set the scene as they are surrounding the whole area and then the other six are my detailed shots as they are closeups of the skaters. When shooting my images i used a fast shutter speed to capture the different facial expressions and movements of the skaters. I preferred to shoot the images with a monochrome filter in black and white as i thought it looked closer into a story of the images.
